Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level domains remained active.
